A Bay Racehorse in a Loosebox

John Frederick Herring Sr., oil on canvas, mid 19th c. · oil on canvas

What it is

Deep straw banks the walls of the loosebox where a bay racehorse stands, head turned toward the door.

Why it matters

Herring's stable interiors were his bread-and-butter work — less grand than the winner's portrait, but they are where his hand is most relaxed, and the horses read as animals rather than trophies.

What to notice

The straw is built up thick against the wall — the everyday comfort a working stable actually gave its champions.

Rest is also a kind of record.
