'The Duke of Grafton's Whisker in a Stable'
John Frederick Herring Sr., oil on canvas, 1835 · oil on canvas
What it is
In the low stable light, the Duke of Grafton's Whisker holds still while Herring picks out the muscle moving under the coat.
Why it matters
Grafton's stable was one of the great classic-winning yards of the age, and a champion this valuable was documented indoors as carefully as he was raced outdoors — the stable portrait was its own kind of record.
What to notice
The corners of the box are left almost black — Herring trusted the horse's own shine to supply the only light that mattered.
A champion's stable is a kind of vault.
