Priam
John Frederick Herring Sr., oil on canvas, 1831 · oil on canvas
What it is
Herring poses Priam square and still, a stable hand's grip steady at the headcollar.
Why it matters
English judges called him close to the ideal Thoroughbred conformation of his age, and within the year America agreed enough to buy him, shipping him across the Atlantic to stand at stud.
What to notice
The near foreleg, set just off the square — Herring's one small departure from the parade-ground stance, and the whole horse looks more alive for it.
Perfection sells; it also emigrates.
