'Mameluke', a bay racehorse, with Will Wheatley up
Benjamin Marshall, oil on canvas, c.1827 · oil on canvas
What it is
Mameluke stands saddled on Newmarket Heath, Will Wheatley up and a groom holding the horse steady at the head.
Why it matters
Marshall painted the whole racing household in one canvas — jockey's seat, groom's hand, owner's colours — because a horse of this quality was never really a solitary animal.
What to notice
the low, flat run of the Heath itself behind him, left bare so the horse is the only thing standing tall in the frame.
A champion travels with a staff.
