American Trotting Stud - Mambino Pilot, Flora Temple
Currier & Ives, hand-coloured lithograph, c.1872 · hand-coloured lithograph
What it is
A breeder's sheet lines up the American trotting stud's sires and dams, Flora Temple among them alongside Mambino Pilot.
Why it matters
Flora Temple was already a legend by the time this sheet was printed — the first trotter to beat 2:20 for the mile — and breeders bought prints like this one hoping her speed would carry into the next generation.
What to notice
each horse posed separately in its own frame, arranged more like a catalogue than a single scene.
A pedigree is a bet placed years before the race.
