The Celebrated Trotting Mare Goldsmith Maid Driven by Budd Doble
Currier & Ives, hand-coloured lithograph, 1871 · hand-coloured lithograph
What it is
Goldsmith Maid, driven by Budd Doble, beating Lucy in three straight heats at Buffalo on the eleventh of August, 1871.
Why it matters
Doble made Goldsmith Maid the sport's dominant name for a decade, and Currier & Ives printed her rival's name into the title itself — beating Lucy was the whole caption.
What to notice
Doble's hands held low and still, a driver trusting the mare more than the whip.
The queen's crown is stitched from other mares' losses.
