Aquatint, Lithograph, and the Instant · The American Trotter
A Good Send Off - Goldsmith Maid, American Girl, Lucy and Henry
Currier & Ives, hand-coloured lithograph, 1872 · hand-coloured lithograph
What it is
Four celebrated trotters — Goldsmith Maid, American Girl, Lucy and Henry — break together at Fleetwood Park, the field still even at the start.
Why it matters
Fleetwood Park was the sport's premier proving ground in the early 1870s, and putting four of the era's best-known names in one field turned the print into a roll call as much as a race.
What to notice
the sulky wheels of the two nearest horses still overlapping at the break.
A field is only honest for one second: the start.
