The Celebrated Trotting Mares Maud S. and Aldine
Currier & Ives, hand-coloured lithograph, 1883 · hand-coloured lithograph
What it is
Maud S. and Aldine stand paired in harness to William H. Vanderbilt's wagon at Morrisania, two celebrated trotting mares matched stride for stride.
Why it matters
Vanderbilt was as well known for his fast road horses as for his railroads, and Currier & Ives sold the pairing itself — his money, these two record mares, moving as one — as the picture's whole appeal.
What to notice
the identical set of the two mares' knees at the same point in the stride.
Even a fortune has to keep time.
