Knight, Death and the Devil
Albrecht Dürer, 1513 · engraving on laid paper
What it is
An armoured knight rides a proud horse through a wild, narrow gorge, followed by Death and a horned devil, in Albrecht Dürer’s engraving of 1513.
Why it matters
It is one of Dürer’s three master prints, made when he had almost stopped painting to concentrate on engraving.
What to notice
The horse steps forward in profile while the dog runs beneath, and a skull rests on a stump at the lower left.
Steady through every fear.
