Two Horses Exercised by a Jockey
Théodore Géricault, 1822 · lithograph
What it is
A rider in a top hat sits a grey and leads a dark horse alongside, both in checked rugs, in Théodore Géricault’s lithograph of 1822.
Why it matters
Géricault was a lithographer as well as a painter, and he gave the working horse the same care as the racehorse.
What to notice
The checks on the two rugs are drawn stroke by stroke, and the led horse’s head pulls slightly away.
Exercise, in the quiet street.
