Animal Locomotion, Plate 614

Eadweard Muybridge, collotype, 1887 · collotype

What it is

A galloping horse broken into a strip of serial exposures on Plate 614, each frame a fraction of a second apart.

Why it matters

Muybridge's Philadelphia studies turned the racehorse from a subject painters guessed at into a subject the camera could prove, frame by numbered frame.

What to notice

The gap between hooves and ground in the mid-stride frames, the stretch no eye alone ever caught.

A gallop is a hundred small landings, not one long leap.
