Animal Locomotion, Plate 628

Eadweard Muybridge, collotype, 1887 · collotype

What it is

Plate 628 walks a horse through a full sequence at its slowest gait, the frames spaced to show a stride most people never bother to watch.

Why it matters

Muybridge studied the walk with the same rigor he gave the gallop, because the slow gaits held their own unresolved questions about footfall order.

What to notice

The evenly spaced footfalls in the walk frames, a rhythm the gallop plates never show.

Even the plainest gait had a secret worth photographing.
