Animal Locomotion, Plate 632

Eadweard Muybridge, collotype, 1887 · collotype

What it is

Plate 632 sets a ridden horse through a full sequence, the rider's posture shifting frame by frame with the animal beneath.

Why it matters

Muybridge rarely stopped at the horse alone — adding a rider let the plates settle a second argument, how a body in the saddle actually moves with the gait rather than how artists had assumed it did.

What to notice

The rider's seat rising and falling out of sync with the horse's back, two motions in one frame.

The camera caught the rider still learning the horse's arithmetic.
