Aquatint, Lithograph, and the Instant · The Instant
Animal Locomotion, Plate 633
Eadweard Muybridge, collotype, 1887 · collotype
What it is
Plate 633 catches a horse and rider frame by frame through a full gallop, the whole action laid out in a row of stopped instants.
Why it matters
Muybridge's studies of the mounted gallop gave the sporting print a rival it never fully answered — a document instead of a guess.
What to notice
The rider's crop hand, caught mid-swing in one frame and already still in the next.
Stopped time still argues its case.
