Animal Locomotion, Plate 635

Eadweard Muybridge, collotype, 1887 · collotype

What it is

Plate 635 closes out the sequence, the horse's stride carried through its final phase before the frames run out.

Why it matters

This plate settled, for good, the flying-gallop question painters had guessed at for a century — whether all four hooves ever truly left the ground at once.

What to notice

The last frame in the row, legs gathered under the body at a point no painted horse had ever quite shown.

An argument a century old, closed in one strip of film.
