Horse Frightened by a Lion
George Stubbs, c. 1762–1768 · oil on canvas
What it is
A cream horse recoils on a rocky slope as a lion emerges from the dark at the left, one of George Stubbs’s lion-and-horse subjects, oil on canvas, 1762 to 1768.
Why it matters
Stubbs returned to this encounter for years; the series let him paint the horse’s anatomy under the strain of pure fear.
What to notice
Look at the hind legs gathered under the body and the mane thrown forward as the head twists away.
The instant before flight.
