Le Jockey
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, 1899 · colour lithograph on China paper
What it is
Two jockeys drive their horses away from you toward the turn, in Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s lithograph of 1899, printed in colour on thin China paper.
Why it matters
The museum record describes the second state, printed in colours, from an edition of 100.
What to notice
The nearer horse is seen almost from behind, its hind legs reaching back at you, and the rail runs away into pale green.
All effort, no faces.
