Warren Hastings on his Arabian Horse
George Townly Stubbs, c. 1796 · graphite and watercolour
What it is
Warren Hastings sits his bay Arabian on a rise above a lake, in George Townly Stubbs’s graphite and watercolour of about 1796.
Why it matters
Hastings governed Bengal from 1772 to 1785; the son of George Stubbs drew him home in England, with the horse as much the subject as the man.
What to notice
The Arabian’s fine head and high tail carriage set it apart from the English hunters in the rest of the stable.
A long career, at rest in the saddle.
