A Horse Stable
Philips Wouwerman, c. 1665–1668 · oil painting
What it is
Inside a Dutch stable, grooms tend the horses as a gentleman and a lady come in at the right, painted by Philips Wouwerman about 1665 to 1668 and signed with his monogram at lower left.
Why it matters
Wouwerman, a member of the Haarlem Guild of St Luke, made his name with hunting scenes and battle pieces full of horses.
What to notice
Light from the open door falls on a white horse, the brightest thing in the room.
The working day, indoors.
