Lion Devouring a Horse
Eugène Delacroix, 1844 · lithograph on wove paper
What it is
A lion crouches over the body of a fallen horse at the mouth of a cave, in Eugène Delacroix’s lithograph on wove paper of 1844, signed in the stone.
Why it matters
Delacroix took up the subject Stubbs had painted eighty years earlier and gave it the dark of the lithographic crayon.
What to notice
The horse’s hoof and leg lie across the lower edge of the sheet, and the lion looks straight out.
The lion’s side of the story.
