Mazeppa on the Dying Horse
Eugène Delacroix, 1824 · oil on canvas
What it is
Mazeppa lies bound to the back of a horse that falls exhausted on the open plain, a bird of prey overhead, in Eugène Delacroix’s small oil on canvas of 1824.
Why it matters
Delacroix, the leader of French Romantic painting, took the young Mazeppa tied to a wild horse from Byron.
What to notice
The horse’s head is buried in the grass, and the open sky fills the top of the picture.
Carried to the end of the world.
