“Coronation”, Winner at Epsom, 1841

John Harris after Charles Hancock, 1841 · hand-coloured aquatint with varnish

What it is

Coronation stands square with his jockey up, in John Harris’s hand-coloured aquatint after Charles Hancock; the lettering records that he was ridden by P. Conolly.

Why it matters

Hancock (about 1800–1877) specialised in equestrian sporting scenes, and his portraits of the Epsom winners were engraved for the print shops.

What to notice

The lettering under the plate gives the breeding: got by Sir Hercules.

Crowned in his year.
