The Royal Mail Coach on the Road
John Frederick Herring Sr., 1841 · oil on panel
What it is
The Royal Mail coach comes head-on down a sandy road with its passengers on the roof, signed and dated in brown paint “J.F. Herring. 1841.”
Why it matters
Mail coaches carried the post to a General Post Office design, with an armed guard at the rear and passengers paying a premium fare.
What to notice
Herring sends the team straight toward the viewer, a bay and a grey in the lead, so the coach seems to arrive.
The post, on time.
