The Suffolk Hunt: Full Cry
John Frederick Herring Sr., 1833 · oil on canvas
What it is
The third Suffolk Hunt canvas, 1833: a rider in scarlet takes a ditch between two pollarded willows while the pack and the field run across the open country beyond.
Why it matters
The middle of the run is where the sporting painter showed the horse at work, and Herring gives it the front of the stage.
What to notice
The two pollard willows frame the jump like a gateway, and a church tower sits small on the horizon.
Over, and on.
