The Suffolk Hunt: Gone Away
John Frederick Herring Sr., 1833 · oil on canvas
What it is
The second of Herring’s four Suffolk Hunt canvases, 1833: the fox has broken from cover and the huntsman on his grey calls the hounds away.
Why it matters
Herring hung the day on four moments, and this is the turn from waiting to running.
What to notice
The fox is a small red streak at the lower left, already ahead of everything else in the picture.
Gone, and everyone after it.
