The London-Manchester Stage Coach, “The Peveril of the Peak”
James Pollard, 1835 · oil on canvas
What it is
The London to Manchester stage coach, the Peveril of the Peak, stands outside the Peacock Inn at Islington with passengers crowding the roof, painted by James Pollard in 1835.
Why it matters
The coach shared its name with Walter Scott’s longest novel, published in 1823 and set partly in the Peak District.
What to notice
The peacock sign hangs above the door, and the wheels are the brightest red in the picture.
Every seat taken, north.
